The Yangtze river between the Wushan mountains

Chapter I

The Path
of Yao Ji

Wushan · China · November 2026

The Myth
"The Twelve Peaks of Wushan rise into the jade void. Clouds conceal the setting sun, and autumn rain drifts across the river."
Li Duan · Tang Dynasty

Yao Ji chose to remain.

In Chinese mythology, Yao Ji was the youngest daughter of the Jade Emperor. Born to the heavens. Untouched by time.

She descended into the mountains of Wushan not by accident, but by choice. The Yangtze was flooding. Twelve dragons were tearing apart the valley. The people had no way through.

Yao Ji came with eleven sisters. Together they stilled the waters, cleared the passage, made the river navigable.

When it was done, she could have returned. She stayed.

Her eleven sisters remained beside her. Twelve peaks above the river. Twelve women who came and did not leave.
